Residents asked for views on how to improve village's Main Street

People living in Winchburgh are being invited to help transform Main Street into a more vibrant, accessible and welcoming place for everyone to travel around and spend time in.

The Winchburgh Community Development Trust in partnership with West Lothian Council and Winchburgh Developments Ltd, successfully applied for Sustrans Scotland’s Street Design Programme in 2018.

The project forms part of a wider vision for the regeneration of Winchburgh and addresses some of the priorities identified by the community in the Village Study (2017) such as ‘bringing people together’, ‘the look and feel of the village’ and ‘developing community spaces’.

The project will be launched at Winchburgh Farmers Market, Community Garden on Main Street from 10am-1pm on Saturday.

Residents, businesses and community groups are invited to drop-in and learn more about the project. There will be treats and refreshments as well as child-friendly activities.

The project area is focused on Main Street, specifically, between the entrance to Daisy Park in the west and the junction with Beatlie Road to the east.

This is the first in a series of engagement activities during which the project partners would like to invite people to share their views and aspirations for the area to ensure

that the future design meets the needs of those who use it the most.

The aim of the collaborative design process is to produce an initial design which

creates warm, welcoming and more attractive public spaces, a comfortable and safe environment to walk, wheel and cycle, better travel experiences through Winchburgh Main Street- particularly when

accessing local facilities and a sense of identity for Main Street, drawing on local culture and heritage.

Hazel Mcleod of Winchburgh Community Development Trust said: “I encourage residents to take the opportunity to contribute to this project to make sure that the Main Street is not left behind by the new developments around the village, acknowledging its history and heritage.

“The Sustrans team bring a wealth of experience working with communities across Scotland.”

Executive Councillor for environment and sustainability at West Lothian Council, Tom Conn added: “West Lothian Council is pleased to be involved in the evolution of Winchburgh’s old main street. We would encourage all residents to get involved with this opportunity to redesign and improve the environment for all users.”

John Hamilton, Chief Executive of Winchburgh Developments (WDL) said: “WDL are delighted to be working in partnership with Sustrans and the Winchburgh Community Development Trust to bring about these improvements to the Main Street and adjoining public spaces.

“We welcome the opportunity to work collaboratively with the project partners to enable good integration of the Main Street into the wider masterplan.”

Another community drop-in event on will be held on Tuesday, April 17 from 7pm to 8.30pm at St Philomena’s Church where we’ll be running activities to seek views.

Until May 8 there will also be an interactive project website will be open to allow people to submit their comments and ideas and find out more about the project at winchburghstreetdesign.commonplace.
