Resident says ugly scenes in middle of the night make Cardiff street unbearable to live in

A resident living on a Cardiff street has said it is “difficult” to live in the area due to fighting and unsociable behaviour during the early hours of the morning which is a common occurrence at weekends.

A video captured on mobile phone footage early on Sunday morning shows a number of people fighting on Bute Street in Cardiff Bay. The footage was captured between 2am and 3am on Sunday. Police said they had spoken to five men and one man had gone into the waters of Cardiff Bay by the Norwegian Church and had to be recovered by the emergency services and taken to hospital.

One resident he has had enough of being woken up at all hours and of living in fear that violent and rowdy behaviour could overspill into people’s homes. You can get the latest WalesOnline newsletters e-mailed to you directly for free by signing up here.

“I’d just come back from work early this morning and I heard and saw this big fight outside on the street,” said the man who lives on Bute Street. “There were horrifying sounds coming from the street, people shouting and screaming, people kicking doors in the middle of the night. They make such a mess on the street too. I’ve asked people to be quiet before but it doesn’t work - and every weekend there are problems here.”

The issue seems to intensify on Saturday nights and early on Sunday mornings, when, the resident believes, people have come out of a nearby nightclub. “It makes it hard to live here,” the man admitted.

“I saw that this morning and I was horrified. Just a few metres from here there’s a really nice area of Cardiff, around the Millennium Centre, but here, when I’m not working I’m at home and my bedroom faces the street - it’s a huge problem. I called the police and when they arrived the people causing trouble all ran away.”

South Wales Police said that five men were spoken to, and that one man had to be recovered from water nearby. A spokesman for South Wales Police said: "Police were called at 3.27am (on Sunday) following a report of a disturbance in Bute Street in Cardiff Bay involving a group of half a dozen men.

"Five of the men were spoken to by officers. One man entered the water near the Norwegian Church. He was subsequently recovered from the water by emergency services and was taken to hospital where he remained overnight. No arrests were made."
