In the wake of the baking weather, the paths around the Gorton Reservoir have been left littered with rubbish. Piles of plastic, fast food wrappers, and barbecue equipment have left a scourge on the popular nature spot in Tameside.
The paths around the lower reservoir were the worst hit yesterday (July 19) following the soaring temperatures. One councillor for the area said he was glad to see so many using the open space, but has implored people to take their rubbish home with them.
“It is great that people are getting out and using our facilities at any time but they must be aware of the dangers of the water and take their rubbish home with them,” Coun John Hughes told the M.E.N.

“That is what I advocate and this issue does annoy me. It would be lighter to carry those items back [once the food and drink has been consumed] and take it home to the bin.
“I would encourage people to carry on using the reservoir and make good use of our open spaces that are free to use. Just think of others and take your rubbish home.”
Coun Hughes said he will be contacting the team at Debdale Park that look after the paths who he hailed as ‘brilliant volunteers’ about this. He believes that this is due to the increased footfall at the reservoirs as a result of the hot weather in the last few days.
