The resentencing hearing for Erik and Lyle Menendez, who infamously shot and killed their parents in 1989, has been rescheduled to March. This decision comes as a result of the Los Angeles County wildfires impacting the proceedings, as confirmed by the county’s District Attorney, Nathan Hochman.
The court hearing, initially set for January 30 and 31, will now be held on March 20 and 21, according to Hochman. He cited the recent wildfires as the reason for the delay, affecting the extensive preparations for the hearings.
In October, Hochman's predecessor, George Gascón, filed a motion urging a judge to consider resentencing the brothers following a review prompted by defense attorneys presenting new evidence in 2023, indicating abuse by their father.
However, the fate of the Menendez brothers remains uncertain, as Hochman has pledged to conduct a thorough review of the case. Before assuming office in December, he expressed his commitment to examining thousands of pages of confidential prison files and trial transcripts, as well as interviewing prosecutors, defense attorneys, and family members.
“Whatever decision I end up taking is one I need to be able to defend in court,” Hochman emphasized in an interview with a source in November, underscoring the gravity of the situation.
