Two NSW teens have had a lucky escape after finding themselves trapped in a cave by pounding surf at Maroubra.
The boys, aged 16 and 17, jumped from the top of cliffs at Mistral Point on Friday, NSW Police said in a statement and were washed against the rocks before scrambling into the refuge of a cliff-face cavity.
Friends contacted emergency services, prompting the involvement of local officers, Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit, Marine Area Command, Surf Life Saving NSW, Randwick Council Lifeguards and NSW Ambulance paramedics.
Eastern Beaches Police Area Command Duty Officer, Chief Inspector Tracy Ford, said the result could have been tragic.
“Whilst the area does attract adventure seekers, it must not be forgotten that the area is still extremely dangerous,” she said.
“Thankfully the Police Rescue and Bomb Disposal Unit are trained for such retrievals – and thanks to the quick response of all first responders – we were able to avoid a tragic outcome this long weekend.”
Due to the location of the teens, officers from Police Rescue had to abseil down to their position before winching them up the cliff face.
NSW Ambulance paramedics treated the boys for minor cuts before taking them to Prince of Wales Hospital as a precaution.
