A 5-month-old gorilla, rescued from a cargo hold of a Turkish Airlines flight from Nigeria to Thailand, is currently recuperating at Polonezkoy Zoo in Istanbul. The gorilla, named Zeytin, was discovered in a box last month and has shown signs of recovery since then.
Officials are considering the possibility of returning Zeytin to his natural habitat, emphasizing the importance of ensuring a safe environment for the young gorilla. Fahrettin Ulu, regional director of Istanbul Nature Conservation and National Parks, expressed the desire for Zeytin to continue his life in his homeland.
Since his rescue, Zeytin has gained weight and is gradually overcoming the trauma of his journey. The zoo's veterinarian, Gulfem Esmen, noted the gorilla's progress, mentioning that he has become more playful and less shy over time.
Both species of gorillas, the western and eastern gorillas, are classified as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature. The interception of illegally traded animals has become more common in Istanbul, as the city serves as a major air hub connecting continents.
In a recent incident at Sabiha Gokcen Airport, customs officials discovered 17 young Nile crocodiles and 10 monitor lizards in the luggage of an Egyptian passenger. These incidents highlight the ongoing challenges in combating wildlife trafficking and the importance of conservation efforts to protect endangered species.
