Congressman Dan Goldman, a former assistant US Attorney, recently discussed an exchange between Attorney General Garland and Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, Jim Jordan, regarding Jack Smith, the special counsel prosecuting federal cases against Trump.
In the exchange, Jordan questioned whether Smith had lobbied for his position, insinuating a conspiracy to undermine Trump. However, Garland clarified that Smith was chosen based on his impartial career experience as a prosecutor.
Goldman highlighted that the real purpose of the hearing was for the Judiciary Committee to oversee the Department of Justice's budget requests. However, he noted that Republicans, led by Jordan, aimed to use the hearing to undermine confidence in the DOJ and FBI.
Goldman emphasized that the attacks on the DOJ were primarily driven by attempts to discredit ongoing legal proceedings against Trump. He pointed out that criticisms of the Manhattan DA trial, such as claims of politicization and attacks on witness credibility, were unfounded.
He defended the integrity of the criminal justice system, stating that Trump's lawyer had ample opportunity to challenge witness credibility during the trial. Despite attempts to undermine the legal process, the jury unanimously found Trump guilty based on the evidence presented.
Goldman reiterated that the DOJ was not involved in the Manhattan DA case, emphasizing the independence of the judicial system. He commended Garland for upholding democratic values and operating the DOJ in line with constitutional principles.
