Republican Senators Confront Secret Service Director Over Trump Assassination Attempt

Donald Trump to testify in New York civil fraud trial

Republican senators confronted Secret Service Director Kimberly Cheatle at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday over the attempted assassination of former President Trump on Saturday, demanding answers from her. Sens. Marsha Blackburn, John Barrasso, James Lankford, and Kevin Cramer were involved in the confrontation in Milwaukee.

Barrasso and Blackburn were seen on video yelling at Cheatle, emphasizing that the agency owes the people and President Trump explanations for the assassination attempt. Cheatle responded by stating that the convention center was not the appropriate place for the discussion but expressed willingness to answer questions before leaving the suite.

The incident has sparked criticism from both Republicans and Democrats regarding the Secret Service's handling of the situation. The shooter, identified as Thomas Matthew Crooks, 20, targeted Trump in Butler, Pennsylvania, resulting in one fatality and two injuries. Lawmakers have raised concerns about the gunman's proximity to Trump and the security lapses that allowed the shooting to occur.

FBI Director Christopher Wray briefed members of Congress to address their inquiries and concerns about the incident. Cheatle has agreed to comply with a subpoena from House Oversight Committee Chair James Comer and acknowledged the shooting as 'unacceptable.' She emphasized the need for a thorough review and ensuring adequate resources for Secret Service personnel.

However, Cheatle faced criticism for mentioning a 'sloped roof' as a safety concern during the incident. Her explanation failed to satisfy many Republican lawmakers, including Barrasso and Blackburn, who called for her resignation, labeling her a 'failed leader.'

Blackburn stated, 'It is appalling that the Secret Service Director refused to answer our questions. She is a failed leader and needs to immediately step down from her position.' Cheatle reiterated her commitment to addressing the security breach and ensuring the agency's preparedness to prevent similar incidents in the future.
