WASHINGTON — Voters in California’s 22nd Congressional District will decide Tuesday who will serve the remainder of former Rep. Devin Nunes’ term.
Nunes, who represented the area around Tulare for nearly two decades, resigned in January to head former President Donald Trump’s social media company.
Republican Connie Conway and Democrat Lourin Hubbard are competing for what amounts to a six-month term.
Unofficial returns show Conway has 35.2% of the votes as of 8:08 p.m. Pacific Time after polls closed. Hubbard has 19.4%.
The historically-Republican district will disappear when new maps, drawn through redistricting, become effective for the next Congress on Jan. 3, 2023.
Conway, 71, and Hubbard, 33, advanced to Tuesday’s runoff after a special election in April. Both candidates stressed water and agricultural issues as top priorities in interviews with The Bee.
Conway, a former state Assemblyman, served as the Republican Leader in that chamber until November 2014. She was Department of Agriculture appointee under Trump and once a Tulare County Supervisor.
Hubbard, a Bakersfield native, is a water resources manager who previously worked for the Fresno County Department of Social Services.
