A CROWDFUNDER for anti-monarchy group Republic has raised almost £90,000.
The Republic Crowdfunder has been running since before October 2022 and has seen donations skyrocket in the last week following the coronation.
Eight demonstrators from Republic were arrested on Saturday as the coronation took place, under the sweeping powers of the new Public Order Act.
The Metropolitan police have since came under fire and the Home Affairs Committee of MPs has confirmed it will scrutinise the Met’s handling of protests over the coronation weekend.
The group shared the update on their social media and said: “Our crowdfunder has now raised almost £90,000 and we're getting tens of thousands of pounds of other donations, sales and members fees coming through, with thousands joining Republic for the first time. Thank you!”
The Crowdfunder page, which now has over 2100 supporters, includes campaign strategies the money will be spent on.
New campaigns will include:
- Digital advertising, including on Google, Facebook and Twitter.
- Events up and down the country, led by local people
- Turbo-charged social media, including Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and TikTok
- Demands for fair coverage from the BBC
- Lobbying of politicians, calling on them to engage with this issue
- A direct challenge to Charles on his claim to the throne and accusations of law breaking
Republic previously used funds raised to launch its coronation campaign with a run of twenty billboards across the UK, each one featuring the #NotMyKing hashtag.
They also carried the message 'Discover the alternative', as the campaign focussed on what will replace the monarchy.
