Reporting on the State

Press freedom is a pressing concern across the world today. There is hardly a country where state or non-state actors have not made attempts to shackle the media. In many countries, journalists have been attacked and even killed. According to the media watchdog Reporters Without Borders, at least 44 news professionals have been killed and 502 jailed across the world since January 1 this year.

In this session, Erkan Saka, associate professor of media and journalism studies at Istanbul Bilgi University; Roel Raymond, editor of Roar Media; and Amber Shamsi, director of the Centre for Excellence in Journalism at the Institute of Business Administration, join Manisha Pande of Newslaundry to discuss why it’s ever more important for the media to report on issues the state tries to suppress.
