Report: Washington close to extension with offensive coordinator Scott Turner

On the surface, you’d think Washington offensive coordinator Scott Turner hasn’t done too good a job in his two seasons as the Commanders’ offensive coordinator. In his first season as Washington’s offensive coordinator in 2020, Turner’s offense finished No. 32 in offensive DVOA per Football Outsiders.

In 2021, the Commanders rose to No. 21 in offensive DVOA. Despite those improvements, Washington’s offense wasn’t considered a team strength.

However, Turner’s two seasons require context. The Commanders have started six different quarterbacks. Yet, Turner has helped improve Washington’s offense from his first season to his second.

Last week, Washington agreed to terms on a trade that would bring Carson Wentz to the Commanders from Indianapolis. Turner would get his guy.

Now, it looks like Turner could be getting some security, too.

JP Finlay of NBC Sports Washington reported Sunday that Turner and Washington were expected to agree to a new multi-year contract extension.

In this era of social media, everyone wants to blame the offensive coordinator when there is a bad play or a bad game. Again, every situation requires context. Turner is doing a good job with the pieces he has on offense. Now, it would be wise for Washington to re-sign Terry McLaurin to a multi-year extension, re-sign running back J.D. McKissic, and get McLaurin some help at wide receiver.

Turner now has his quarterback and it will be up to him to help Wentz turn his career around.
