Report: Things ‘trending’ towards Jaguars retaining this coaching staff member

According to a recent report, a third member of the Jacksonville Jaguars’ 2024 coaching staff will return for 2025 under new head coach Liam Coen.

We already knew that tight ends coach Richard Angulo and special teams coordinator Heath Farwell would be back, and now, according to John Shipley of Jaguars’ on Sports Illustrated’s, it looks like assistant special teams coordinator Luke Thompson will return as well.

“According to a source with knowledge of the situation,” wrote Shipley, “things are trending in a positive direction for assistant special teams coordinator Luke Thompson to return under Coen’s staff.”

Thompson has been the Jaguars’ assistant special teams coordinator since the 2022 season, spending the last three years working alongside Farwell.

During that time, the Jaguars’ special teams unit has steadily improved and been one of the top units in the NFL by PFF’s metrics.

In 2022, the Jaguars’ special teams unit ranked 19th by PFF’s grading system. In 2023, they ranked ninth and then sixth in 2024.

Individually, several Jaguars’ players during that span have made Pro Bowls while punter Logan Cooke and long-snapper Ross Matiscik have made All-Pro teams.

The Jaguars’ coaching staff is now really beginning to take shape. The last big domino to fall is the hiring of an offensive coordinator.
