The Houston Texans are getting closer to naming Lovie Smith as their fifth full-time coach in team history.
According to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network, the Texans are moving closer towards promoting their defensive coordinator and associate head coach to the top job.
The Texans fired David Culley after one year with the rookie coach posting a 4-13 record.
Smith previously had been the coach at the University of Illinois from 2016-20, going 17-39 in the process. The 63-year-old also coached the Chicago Bears from 2004-12 and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2014-15.
Houston’s other finalists for the coaching job include former Miami Dolphins coach Brian Flores and former NFL quarterback Josh McCown.
