The Houston Rockets are signing Joshua Obiesie to a non-guaranteed Exhibit 10 training camp contract, per Keith Smith of Spotrac.
The 6-foot-6 wing went undrafted by the NBA in 2019 and has played internationally for Würzburg Baskets, Bayern Munich, and Fraport Skyliners in the years since. A Munich native, all three teams are in Germany’s Basketball Bundesliga (BBL) professional league.
Now 23 years old, Obiesie averaged 12.1 points, 3.2 rebounds and 3.2 assists in 24 minutes per game last season.
NBA teams can carry up to 20 players on their roster during each offseason and continuing through training camp and the preseason. The Rockets offloaded several players near the end of their bench as part of salary clearing moves in 2023 free agency, so Houston’s 2023-24 roster, at the moment, is far below that 20-player limit.
Thus, expect other camp deals to be announced in the weeks leading up to its opening in early October. Players from Houston’s strong 2023 summer-league run are also likely to be considered.
Should they play well enough, Houston will certainly consider any player in camp for spots on its final regular-season roster (up to 15 standard contracts and three two-way deals). However, many players on camp contracts could also be considered for a spot with the Rockets’ NBA G League affiliate, the Rio Grande Valley (RGV) Vipers.
