Report: Raiders expected to hire Patriots’ Josh McDaniels as next head coach

The New England Patriots are going to need to find a new offensive coordinator, with Josh McDaniels expected to join the Las Vegas Raiders as their next head coach, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Vegas had a hot-and-cold courting process with McDaniels, who was then wasn’t then was their top candidate over the course of last week. Whatever the reasoning for that drama, the Raiders have put together a deal with McDaniels and his favorite GM candidate, Dave Ziegler, who is also joining Vegas. Ziegler is expected to leave his post with the Patriots as the director of player personnel, per multiple reports.

McDaniels will replace interim coach Rich Bisaccia, who served as the interim-coach after the Raiders fired Jon Gruden midseason for making racist and homophobic remarks in an email.

McDaniels spent two seasons as the coach and de-facto general manager with the Denver Broncos, who fired him during his second season after a 11-17 overall record. McDaniels appeared to be joining the Indianapolis Colts in 2018, but bailed at the last minute after getting a pay bump from New England. He has been the Patriots offensive coordinator from 2005 to 2008 and 2015 to 2021, working with quarterbacks Tom Brady, Mac Jones, Jimmy Garoppolo, Jacoby Brissett and Brian Hoyer.

It will be interesting to see how McDaniels fares with Derek Carr and Vegas — especially because it may be his final opportunity as a head coach.
