Report praises North Lanarkshire adult support and protection services

Inspectors have carried out a robust inspection of adult support and protection services within North Lanarkshire.

The Care Inspectorate report concluded the North Lanarkshire partnership’s key processes for adult support and protection were effective with areas for improvement.

There were clear strengths supporting positive experiences and outcomes for adults at risk of harm, which collectively outweighed the areas for improvement.

Jackie Irvine, chief executive of the Care Inspectorate, told Lanarkshire Live : “Our inspection has found that the partnership’s key processes and leadership for adult support and protection were generally sound and effective.

“While there were areas for improvement in both key processes and leadership, none of them were major. And given the partnership’s solid capacity for improvement, we are confident it can deliver the required improvements promptly.

“We have asked the North Lanarkshire partnership to prepare an improvement plan to address the priority areas for improvement we have identified.

“The Care Inspectorate, through its link inspector, Healthcare Improvement Scotland and His Majesty’s Inspectorate of Constabulary in Scotland will monitor progress implementing this plan.”

The report found that adults at risk of harm had improved safety, health and wellbeing because of the diligent work of partnership staff.

It also found that staff conducted initial inquiries into the circumstances of adults at risk of harm efficiently and effectively and the strategic leaders enabled a culture of strong, credible, strategic partnership working for adult support and protection.

However, there were other areas that need to be improved.

These include the police should attend all initial adult protection case conferences they are invited to, the partnership should improve the quality of chronologies for adults at risk of harm and the adult protection committee should consider securing direct representation from adults at risk of harm and their unpaid carers.

Ross McGuffie, chief officer, Health & Social Care North Lanarkshire, said: “We welcome the publication of the joint inspection of adult support and protection.

“We are pleased that the inspectors acknowledged clear strengths in ensuring adults at risk of harm are safe, protected and supported.

“The inspection findings are positive and recognise the hard work and determination of staff across the partnership over the last two years as well as the strong multi-agency arrangements in North Lanarkshire.

“It’s particularly encouraging that the inspectors noted that adults at risk of harm had improved safety, health and wellbeing because of the diligent work of partnership staff.

“However, we are not complacent and always looking to improve how we deliver those services to best meet the needs of our communities to ensure that we can support and protect people in North Lanarkshire.

“We will continue to ensure that the areas of strength are maintained and the areas for improvement are acted upon.”
