Report: Penn State to Hire VCU’s Mike Rhoades As Next Coach

Penn State is set to hire VCU’s Mike Rhoades as the school’s next men’s basketball coach, according to a report from Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports.

Rhoades will replace Micah Shrewsberry, who left his post for the coaching job at Notre Dame. He orchestrated a swift two-season turnaround in Happy Valley that saw the Nittany Lions reach the round of 32 in the NCAA tournament this season.

Rhoades’s salary is expected to be in excess of $3 million per season, according to Rothstein. ESPN’s Pete Thamel was first to report the school’s interest in Rhoades on Wednesday morning.

Rhoades landed at VCU after beginning his head coaching career at Rice, where he went 99–47 across three seasons before leaving for the position with the Rams. He has spent the last six seasons at VCU, where he won a regular-season Atlantic 10 title in 2018–19, a conference championship this season and guided the Rams to three NCAA tournament appearances.
