In a pretty surprising Monday move, the New England Patriots have reportedly waived running back James Robinson, per ESPN’s Field Yates.
Robinson was expected to step into the backup role behind Rhamondre Stevenson and create a new one-two punch out of the offensive backfield. The team lost Damien Harris to the Buffalo Bills in the offseason, and the addition of Robinson was supposed to help them fill that void.
However, things might have been better than expected at running back with Ty Montgomery returning as the primary third-down option, and both Kevin Harris and Pierre Strong Jr. improving in their second year.
Meanwhile, Stevenson is versatile enough to hurt opposing defenses on the ground and through the air. By the end of the 2023 season, he could be looked at as one of the best running backs in the league.

Robinson struggled in the end of his run with the Jacksonville Jaguars, and things never got any better for him in the one year he spent with the New York Jets. It seems like New England was just another dead end destination for the 24-year-old ball-carrier.
