Report: Patriots never seriously considered Will Grier starting at QB

The New England Patriots quarterback room was inconsistent at times in the 2023 season.

The team carried primarily three quarterbacks with Mac Jones, Bailey Zappe and Will Grier making up the room. But Grier was never a serious consideration to start for the Patriots, as noted in a detailed report from the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan and Doug Kyed.

Grier was signed by the Patriots on September 22 off the Bengals’ practice squad. He was waived on November 25 and re-signed a short time later to the practice squad.

He was signed off the New England practice squad on December 18, landing with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Despite all the dysfunction in the quarterback room, it became clear that Grier was never going to get a shot at starting for New England, as transcribed by NESN.com’s Adam London.

The Herald wrote:

Newly signed backup Will Grier was never a serious consideration, per sources, despite being told he could compete for playing time. That left Jones all alone in a quarterbacks room that sources familiar with the room paint as quiet and uncomfortable.

This is just another example of dysfunction within the Patriots’ organization. Given the struggles of Zappe and Jones, the fact that Grier never got playing time is a bit surprising.
