Report: Patriots make surprising cut following blowout loss to Texans

The New England Patriots are reportedly releasing veteran center Nick Leverett, following Sunday’s blowout loss to the Houston Texans. ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported the news on Monday.

It’s a surprising move for the Patriots considering Leverett was initially considered the top backup behind David Andrews. He assumed the role as the starter after Andrews went down with a season-ending shoulder injury.

Former undrafted free agent Ben Brown signed with the team last week and made his debut start in Sunday’s game against the Texans. He didn’t allow a single sack and made all of the offensive line calls after only two practices with the Patriots.

Meanwhile, Leverett didn’t do much to convince the Patriots he was in a sustainable role as the offensive line anchor. He gave up nine pressures against the Miami Dolphins last week and had multiple penalties.

Even if the Patriots are making the shift to Brown, it’s still surprising they would move on from Leverett considering the few options available to them. At the very least, he could have remained in a backup role for the team.
