The New England Patriots didn’t waste time filling in the open roster spot left after the release of cornerback Jack Jones on Monday.
Per the Boston Herald’s Andrew Callahan, the Patriots have claimed former San Francisco 49ers and Jacksonville Jaguars running back JaMychal Hasty off waivers.
Hasty joins an offensive backfield that includes Rhamondre Stevenson, Ezekiel Elliott and Ty Montgomery. Loading up at running back could signal a switch to a more run-focused attack, especially if the team decides to move away from Mac Jones at quarterback.
Hasty came out of college undrafted in 2020, but he has managed to get on the field in a total of 39 games. In four NFL seasons, he has 101 carries for 410 yards and four touchdowns.

The Patriots don’t need him to be a savior, but he could stick around if he proves to be a strong complementary piece behind Stevenson and Elliott. His experience on special teams is also a huge plus for a team that loves versatile players.
The good news is he’ll have some time to get up to speed with the offense with the Patriots currently on their bye week.
