Report: Patriots, Bill Belichick Agreed to Offseason Contract Extension

Patriots coach Bill Belichick agreed to a “lucrative” multi-year contract extension in the offseason, according to a report from NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport on Sunday morning.

“Sources say Bill Belichick, during the offseason, quietly agreed to terms on a lucrative multi-year new contract…it’s fair to say there was at least some uncertainty or intrigue surrounding him. Now, contractually, he is locked up long term.”

New England is 1-5 on the season, and off to their worst six game start in the Belichick era. With the fan base stirring and outsiders wondering if Belichick’s job would be in jeopardy, the new contract that the longtime Patriots coach agreed to in the offseason certainly changes the conversation regarding his future.

While Rapoport did not disclose the specifics of the financial commitment from the Patriots to Belichick, one can assume that it would be expensive for team owner Robert Kraft to part ways with his longtime head coach, who with Tom Brady helped the franchise capture six Super Bowl titles in his two decades at the helm.

The Patriots host the 4-2 Bills in Foxborough on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
