Report: Panthers unlikely to trade for Browns QB Baker Mayfield before draft

From holding leverage to having the inside track, it seems the Carolina Panthers could get Baker Mayfield if they really wanted to. But do they really want to?

According to team beat writer Sheena Quick, perhaps not so much.

On Monday afternoon, Quick reported that the Panthers’ “interest” in the Cleveland Browns quarterback is just simply due diligence. She also notes that a potential trade for the former No. 1 overall pick prior to the upcoming draft is “highly unlikely.”

Much of the noise around Carolina possibly trading for Mayfield shouldn’t really be coming as a surprise. There is, of course, the matter of the Browns now having to ship off the disgruntled passer following their massive deal for three-time Pro Bowler Deshaun Watson.

Plus, not only are the Panthers one of a few teams left with an unresolved situation under center, but general manager Scott Fitterer is amongst the most active front office men in the game. So when you’re “in on every deal,” you’re also “in” on every name that’ll pop up.

And if this is, in fact, only due diligence, then we’re sure Robby Anderson is somewhere out there nodding approvingly.
