The Panthers are expected to draft a quarterback with the newly-acquired No. 1 pick in the upcoming NFL draft. While the identity of that player is not yet known, whoever steps under center for Carolina this season will have a new big target at tight end.
According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Panthers are expected to sign former Bengals tight end Hayden Hurst. The 29-year-old recently wrapped up his first and only season in Cincinnati, catching 52 passes for 414 yards and two touchdowns.
No deals can be made official until 4 p.m. ET Wednesday when the new league year begins.
Hurst, a 2018 first-round pick out of South Carolina, began his career with the Ravens. After two years in Baltimore, he was traded to the Falcons, with whom he played two seasons before signing with the Bengals last offseason. Hurst played on a one-year, $3.5 million deal with Cincinnati.
He has 177 receptions for 1,718 yards and 14 touchdowns over his five-year NFL career.
