The Green Bay Packers were in on a trade for receiver Chase Claypool, but the Pittsburgh Steelers went with another offer instead.
According to Tom Silverstein of the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the Packers offered a second-round pick to the Steelers for Claypool, but the Steelers went with the Bears’ offer of a second-round pick because the team figured Chicago’s pick in the second round of the 2023 draft would end up higher than Green Bay’s.
Both the Bears and Packers are 3-5 after eight games.
Instead of landing in Green Bay as a new weapon for Aaron Rodgers, Claypool is headed to Chicago to team with Darnell Mooney as the new 1-2 receiver punch for second-year quarterback Justin Fields.
The Bears had an extra second-round pick after dealing Roquan Smith to the Baltimore Ravens earlier this week.
Claypool, the 49th overall pick in the 2020 draft, has 32 catches for 311 yards and one touchdown in 2022. He has 153 career catches and 12 touchdowns in 39 games. As a rookie in 2020, Claypool caught nine scores.
The 24-year-old is under contract through the 2023 season.
After missing out on Claypool, the Packers ended up not making a move before the trade deadline.
