Report: Notre Dame Men’s Basketball Eyes Penn State’s Shrewsberry

Penn State men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry has reportedly emerged as a frontrunner to land the head coaching vacancy at Notre Dame after the Fighting Irish parted ways with Mike Brey following the 2022-23 season.

According to Jon Rothstein of CBS Sports, Shrewsberry is the top candidate to become Notre Dame's head coach, though the Nittany Lions are hoping to keep him in State College.

Rothstein indicated Penn State is lining up a lucrative, long-term bid for Shrewsberry in hopes of persuading the 46-year-old to stay.

Notre Dame announced in January that Brey would not be returning to the program for the 2023-24 season.

Shrewsberry has been the head coach at Penn State since 2021. After the Nittany Lions logged a 14–17 record in his first year at the helm, the team made the NCAA tournament in 2022-23 and reached the round of 32. It was the first time the program had been to the Big Dance since 2011.

As for the Fighting Irish, they missed out on the tournament after going 11–21, and 3≠17 in conference play. They’ve made just one NCAA tournament appearance since 2017, a poor stretch they’re hoping Shrewsberry can help put a swift end to.
