Report: NFL Star Running Back Will Return to Team in ’23 After Calling That ‘Worst Case Scenario’

Chargers star running back Austin Ekeler will return to the franchise next season after reworking his contract with the team, according to a report from ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

Ekeler, who requested a trade earlier this offseason, will now remain with the team after $2 million worth of incentives were added to his existing contract. The 28-year-old running back will be a free agent following next season, as he enters the final year of a four-year, $24.5 million extension he signed following the 2019 season.

Ekeler had one of the best seasons of his career in 2022, scoring 18 total touchdowns which led the NFL. During an appearance on SiriusXM Fantasy Sports Radio in April, he called a return to L.A. for the season “the worst-case scenario,” though the added incentives likely ease that stance. Even though he requested a trade, Ekeler said that he has “no ill will” towards the organization and that he desires a long-term deal when he enters free agency, whether that’s in Los Angeles or elsewhere.

Regardless, Chargers fans should brace for the potential for this to be the final year that Ekeler plays for the franchise, especially considering the track record of running backs once they hit age 30.

Los Angeles may be reluctant to sign him to a big-money long-term deal if the club believes he’s on the downside of his prime, but if he plays well again this upcoming season, he may make a case to remain in powder blue.
