Report: New Bears GM Ryan Poles demanded control in hiring a head coach

The Chicago Bears have finally found their new general manager in Kansas City Chiefs assistant director of player personnel Ryan Poles.

Poles was considered a favorite to land the Bears GM job, among others. He was a finalist for both the Minnesota Vikings and New York Giants GM vacancies.

Poles was in Chicago on Tuesday for this second interview, and the Bears weren’t going to let him get on a plane to interview with the Vikings for the second time. But there were some conditions, it seems.

According to Jeff Hughes of Da Bears Blog, Poles “demanded” control in the interviewing process for a new head coach, and he got it.

The Bears already have three head coach finalists in Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus and former Lions/Colts head coach Jim Caldwell. And Poles is going to conduct those interviews.

One of the criticisms of the Bears ownership was the fact they had three head coach finalists in place before they had hired a GM. Now, it appears Poles will get the chance to call the shots, which could also mean additional candidates are added to the finalists.

With Poles now in place, the head coaching interview process should speed up in the coming days, where Caldwell, Eberflus and Quinn are all expected to interview in the next couple of days.
