Report: Mekhi Becton’s season could be over

The worst may be a reality for the New York Jets regarding right tackle Mekhi Becton.

Connor Hughes of SNY reports that, as a result of his knee injury suffered Monday, Becton’s 2022 season could be over. Hughes reports the injury is to his cap and patella.

The day started off so promising for Becton. He was in the middle of a strong camp and was looking settled in at the right tackle position. After falling backward on a run play, Becton limped off the field.

It was later thought that the knee injury was not that serious. “Stable” was a word used by head coach Robert Saleh to describe the injury. Then came the MRI and it turned out the injury was much more severe than initially thought.

This would mark the second straight season Becton has suffered a serious knee injury. His MCL sprain suffered in Week 1 last season kept him out for the remainder of the season. Becton is now looking at the possibility of having played one game out of 34 in two seasons and has yet to play a full season in his career. He missed two games with a shoulder sprain in 2020.

The Jets have to decide on Becton’s fifth-year option next offseason and with the option now fully guaranteed the moment it is exercised, the Jets have a tough decision to make, but you can make an argument they will decline the option.
