Former Boston Celtics forward Marcus Morris is having second thoughts about signing with the San Antonio Spurs, per multiple reports, but he won’t be returning the Celtics.
Instead, Morris is looking at signing with the New York Knicks.
The cap space for a potential Morris deal came about after Bullock’s health made his recently-agreed-to two-year, $21 million deal less attractive to New York after it was determined he may miss much of the 2018-19 NBA season.
Both parties are amicable to renegotiating Bullock’s contract and that has made bringing on Mook a possibility.
The allure of getting three-fourths of the two-year salary offered by the Spurs in just half the time, with a chance to land a similar deal next summer, is likely tantalizing despite the well-known dysfunction of the New York franchise.
However, with Taj Gibson and last season’s ninth overall pick Kevin Knox the only real competition besides Julius Randle for significant minutes at either forward slot, Morris would likely see more playing time than he would in San Antonio’s stacked forward rotation.
Morris will likely not see the postseason should he back out of his deal with the Spurs but a deep postseason run with San Antonio wasn’t very likely either.
Ultimately, the prospect of getting back on the market in what will be a rather barren 2020 free agent class and with a bit more cash in hand could very well end up shuffling his (and two teams’) plans this summer.
