The Chicago Bulls has yet to see their entire core on the floor together since last January.
Lonzo Ball continues to attempt to rehab his knee injury, which he underwent a second procedure on in September to help with lingering pain and discomfort.
Joe Cowley of The Chicago Sun Times appeared on 670 The Score on Tuesday to discuss the Bulls and gave an update on Ball’s knee.
“I think they are as perplexed as Lonzo is,” Cowley said of the Bulls. “They’re all sticking to it’s not chronic, it’s not career-threatening. I think this year is a pretty much a wash. I’d be shocked.”
“There’s a lot of confusion. Is there a nerve in there that’s damaged? Is it long-term?” Cowley asked. “It’s not like they are hiding something from us — they don’t know. Lonzo doesn’t know. His camp doesn’t know. Medical doesn’t know.”
Ball has continued to feel pain and discomfort in his knee since attempting to ramp up rehab last season before the postseason, leading to the second procedure in September to hopefully help allievate the pain but to no avail.
“I’ve heard he’s had third, fourth, fifth, sixth opinions,” Cowley said. “That they are scouring for something that makes sense.”
Prior to Chicago’s victory against the Orlando Magic on Saturday, Bulls coach Billy Donovan was asked for an update on Ball’s progress.
“He’s made some progress, but I’d be the first one to tell you he’s nowhere near playing,” Donovan said on Saturday. “He’s just not because he’s not running on a consistent basis. When he can get to that place where he can do that consistently and be able to come back the next day and do it again, do it again and do it again — I think you’ll feel a little bit more optimistic.”
As Cowley said, just as this season is a wash for Ball, it seems to be a wash for the franchise as a whole.
