Lions defensive back C.J. Gardner-Johnson was carted off the field during Monday’s practice after a non-contact knee injury on his right leg, as Dave Birkett of the Detroit Free Press reported.
The offseason addition for the Lions was reportedly visibly upset after the injury, and captains Jared Goff and Isaiah Buggs went on the field to comfort him, Tim Twentyman reported.
After practice, ESPN’s Field Yates reported that Gardner-Johnson suffered no structural damage to his knee. The defensive back is now considered day-to-day.
Gardner-Johnson was picked up by the Lions on a one-year deal back in March after one season with the Eagles and three with the Saints prior to that. In 2022 with Philadelphia, he pulled in 11 interceptions, tied for the most in the NFL with three other players while playing a strong part in the team's run to Super Bowl LVII.
The 25-year-old finished the 2022 season with 67 tackles, eight pass defenses and five tackles for loss across 12 games.
