Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Inter Miami is reportedly interested in signing former Real Madrid attacking midfielder James Rodriguez in the January transfer window. The Colombian, who spent three seasons at the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, is currently plying his trade at La Liga side Rayo Vallecano.
Former Real Madrid Man James Rodriguez Is Struggling in Spain
Colombia captain Rodriguez lit up the 2024 Copa America, delivering jaw-dropping performances throughout the competition and taking his country all the way to the final. Lionel Messi’s Argentina had the last laugh in the decider, but Rodriguez left with his head held high, claiming the Player of the Tournament award. The gifted playmaker scored one goal and provided six assists in six Copa America games.
On the back of his sensational Copa America run, Rodriguez joined Rayo Vallecano from Sao Paulo in August 2024. There was hope that he would be able to revive his career at Rayo, but so far, he has not had enough opportunities to do so. Since the beginning of the season, Rodriguez has only played 136 minutes of soccer across six games in La Liga, breaking into the starting XI just once.
According to GOAL, there are suggestions that Rodriguez’s one-year contract with Rayo Vallecano (until June 2025) could be terminated at the end of the year. This will allow him to seek out another new challenge in 2025.
Inter Miami Interested in James Rodriguez
As per reports in the United States (via Estadio Deportivo), 2024 Supporters’ Shield winners Inter Miami are keeping a close eye on Rodriguez’s situation.
The Herons are planning to bolster their squad after suffering the heartbreaking exit to Atalanta United in the MLS Cup Play-Off in November. The club’s co-owner David Beckham as well as members of the board are interested in adding more proven match-winners to the squad for a more competitive 2025 campaign. And Rodriguez, who has played in some of the biggest matches for club and country, is one of the most perfect candidates for the job.
Rodriguez, however, is not the only name on Miami’s list. Ex-Real Madrid star and 2022 FIFA World Cup winner Angel Di Maria and former Barcelona ace Neymar are also in consideration.
