Miami Heat coach Erik Spoelstra’s storied tenure is reportedly set to continue for the foreseeable future after both sides agreed to a lucrative extension on Tuesday.
Spoelstra, the Heat’s coach since 2008, inked an eight-year contract that will put him in line to become one of the NBA’s highest-paid coaches, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The exact details of the deal are unknown at this time, but the agreement will reportedly net Spoelstra “$120 million-plus” and will include the “most committed coaching money” in NBA history, per Wojnarowski.
A two-time NBA champion with over 700 career wins, Spoelstra has become a fixture within Heat culture during a decades-long stint that began in 1995. A four-year run as a video coordinator/assistant coach led to a promotion as a full-time assistant in 1999, a role he served until succeeding Pat Riley in April 2008.
Over his career, Spoelstra has made six Finals appearances, with his two titles coming in 2012 and ’13 while leading the “Big Three” of LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh. He also ranks in the top 20 of coaching victories, with a 725–506 record in the regular season and a 109–75 record in the playoffs.
