Report: Giants to activate Nick Gates from PUP next week

New York Giants offensive lineman Nick Gates is a little more than one year removed from a gruesome leg injury and despite the initial concerns, it would appear that his career is not over.

General manager Joe Schoen and head coach Brian Daboll have routinely expressed an optimism about Gates’ recovery and now the team is ready to take the next step.

Dan Duggan of The Athletic reports that the Giants intend to activate Gates from the physically unable to perform (PUP) list next week.

Once Gates is officially activated, he’ll be eligible to practice for the team for 21 days. At the end of that window, the Giants will either have to return Gates to their active roster and allow him to revert back to PUP for the remainder of the season.

There’s obviously no way of telling which direction things will go, but the mere fact that Gates is able to return to practice at all is remarkable. That especially true when you consider that losing his leg was very much in play early on.

“This guy has been rehabbing unbelievable,” Daboll said in July. “He’s made a lot of strides.”
