The 2023 NFL Scouting Combine is coming to a close and despite in-person meetings each day of the event, the New York Giants are expected to leave Indianapolis without a deal for quarterback Daniel Jones in place, according to NFL Media.
After several days of meetings at the 2023 NFL Scouting Combine, Giants officials and Jones’ agents are expected to leave Indianapolis on Sunday without a contract resolution in sight, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Saturday evening.
The Giants have until Tuesday to decide whether to place the franchise tag on Jones.
For general manager Joe Schoen, the franchise tag represents a last resort and will severely damage the team’s ability to make quality signings in free agency. It carries a guaranteed salary of $32.42 million, which would eat up the vast majority of the team’s available $44 million cap space (not including the coming release of wide receiver Kenny Golladay).
Over the past week, rumors and reports have suggested varying numbers from both sides of these negotiations. Some claim Jones has asked for as much as $48 million per season, while others claim the Giants have offered as little as $35 million per season.
Although there is a “glimmer of hope” that a deal gets done before Tuesday, there still appears to be a significant gap between what the Giants are offering and what Jones is seeking.
If a deal can not be reached and the franchise tag is placed on Jones, the Giants and Schoen will then turn their attention to other in-house free agents.
