Former NFL defensive back Sergio Brown has been arrested in connection with the death of his mother, according to a report from Josh Campbell and Eric Levenson of CNN.
Myrtle Brown, 73, was found dead on Sept. 16 in Maywood, Ill., a village in the Chicago metro area. The discovery of her body in a creek followed a search initiated by relatives unable to contact either Myrtle or Sergio.
“Myrtle was a beautiful, loving, and inspirational soul that made everyone around her feel like they mattered. With her contagious smile and personality, our loss of Myrtle has left an indescribable void not only in our lives, but in our communities,” the Brown family said in a statement last week.
Law enforcement sources indicated that Brown traveled to Mexico after his mother’s death, Campbell and Levenson reported. Mexico deported Brown to the United States Tuesday, and he was reportedly apprehended near San Diego.
Sergio Brown, 35, played for the Patriots, Colts, Jaguars and Bills from 2010 to ’16. A native of Maywood, he played collegiately for Notre Dame from ’06 to ’09.
