Report: ESPN Not Expected to Renew Bomani Jones’s Contract

The layoffs at ESPN continue their ripple effect through the sports network titan, with another big name apparently on his way out the door.

Bomani Jones is reportedly not expected to have his contract renewed after it expires at the end of this month, according to Andrew Cohen of Front Office Sports. Cohen spoke to Jones about the situation, who spoke about the shifting landscape of sports media during what’s been a difficult stretch.

“The economic fate of people in sports media is getting dicier and dicier by the day,” Jones said. “I think the ESPN layoffs were the beginning of it in a lot of ways. Seeing what happened [with] the New York Times shutting down their sports department and they moved those people to other desks, but at some point they’re probably going to deem those people to be surplus and they’re not going to be there anymore.”

Jones has written for ESPN since 2004 and has since seen gone on to appear as a host and panelist for numerous programs. He currently hosts The Right Time with Bomani Jones podcast, and has appeared on shows like Around the HornSportsCenter, First Take and Outside the Lines.

ESPN has laid off about 20 high-profile on-air personalities over the past month, including Todd McShay, David Pollack, Jeff Van Gundy, Jalen Rose, Keyshawn Johnson and Suzy Kolber.
