For several weeks, rumors have circulated that quarterback Daniel Jones was seeking $45 million annually from the New York Giants. That speculation was finally confirmed on Thursday evening with a bit of a twist.
Pat Leonard of the New York Daily News reports that Jones and his reps are actually seeking more than $45 million per year.
League sources tell the Daily News that Jones’ representatives are asking for more than $45 million per year on a multi-year contract extension.
That’s over $12.6 million more than what Schoen could get Jones for in 2023 on the $32.4 million non-exclusive franchise tag.
That is an astronomical number for Jones to be eyeing, which would explain why general manager Joe Schoen has been meeting with his agents in person on a daily basis.
It’s also important to remember that this is a negotiation and as we’ve noted previously, you start high and then work toward a middle ground. It’s a common tactic and not necessarily a line in the sand.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport also reported on Thursday that the two sides have gotten closer to a deal in recent days and there’s a “glimmer of hope” an agreement will be reached prior to the franchise tag deadline.

Schoen expressed a similar optimism while appearing on Good Morning Football but did acknowledge that there’s a bit of a “time crunch” to get things done. If they can’t come to an agreement, the Giants may be forced to use the franchise tag on Jones.
