Report: Colts Make Running Back Roster Swap Amid Jonathan Taylor Absence

The Colts are releasing running back Deon Jackson and signing Trey Sermon to the active roster off their practice squad, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reports.

Jackson started for Indianapolis in Week 1, rushing for 14 yards on 13 attempts vs. the Jaguars, but he did not get a carry last week against the Texans. The veteran had been with the team since 2021 and played in 16 games last year, totaling 236 yards and one touchdown.

Last week, Zack Moss was the only running back to get a carry, rushing for 88 yards and a touchdown on 18 attempts in the Colts’ first win of the season after missing Week 1 with an injury. Sermon, a former 49ers’ third round pick who spent last season with the Eagles, joins Moss and Jake Funk on the team’s active depth chart.

The Colts released Deon Jackson after the running back spent parts over two seasons with the team.

Indianapolis is still without star running back Jonathan Taylor, who is spending the first four weeks of the season on the PUP list as he recovers from ankle surgery. However, the Colts and Taylor have still yet to settle the running back’s trade request and ask for a new contract, so he still may not return to the team once eligible.
