The Clippers have entered the Kyrie Irving sweepstakes and have engaged with the Nets about a potential trade for the star guard, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.
The Lakers, Mavericks and Suns are also linked to Irving, who requested a trade from the Nets on Friday ahead of next week’s trade deadline.
After Irving and the Nets were unable to come to an agreement on a long-term contract extension, the All-NBA guard made it clear that if he was not traded, he would leave this summer in free agency.
Irving reportedly was seeking a four-year deal in the neighborhood of $198.5 million, but the Nets were unwilling to go to those lengths in an extension given the varying availability of the point guard for various reasons over the last couple of seasons.
As a result, the future of Irving remains a mystery, but it seems unlikely that his tenure with the Nets will have a happy ending.
