Report: Chiefs to Sign Veteran Receiver to Roster After Breakout Season

After losing wideout Mecole Hardman in free agency to the Jets, the Super Bowl champion Chiefs added a new offensive weapon on Friday.

According to a report from NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo, Kansas City has agreed to terms with former Giants wideout Richie James. The former Middle Tennessee standout enjoyed a career year in 2022 when he hauled in 57 receptions for 569 yards and four touchdowns.

James, who worked primarily in the slot last season for the Giants, will likely take over the same role for the Chiefs following Hardman’s departure, providing another valued target for Patrick Mahomes.

The speedy wideout will also play a pivotal role on special teams after previously excelling in that position with the 49ers. Over the course of his four-year career, James has returned 75 punts for 547 yards, in addition to tallying 47 kickoff returns for 1,081 yards and a touchdown.

James, a 2018 seventh-round draft pick, joins a Kansas City receiving corps that is led by Marquez Valdes-Scantling, Kadarius Toney and Skyy Moore. As fans know the Chiefs also possess the NFL’s best tight end in Travis Kelce, who anchors the offensive attack around Mahomes.
