The Cleveland Browns are anything but comfortable at the quarterback position entering the 2025 offseason.
ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler analyzed the Browns’ disappointing 2024 season and their plans for 2025, particularly at the quarterback position. This makes a ton of sense as the team is set to start Bailey Zappe, their fourth different quarterback for two years in a row, against the Baltimore Ravens in Week 18.
Regarding Deshaun Watson, Fowler reports that while no definitive decisions have been made, Watson is expected to return to the team “in some capacity” next season. However, Fowler notes that Watson’s repeated season-ending injuries “have to” influence Cleveland’s plans moving forward.
A source close to the Browns told Fowler, “Any veteran with starter’s talent” will be considered, including Falcons quarterback Kirk Cousins. Similar to Russell Wilson’s situation in Pittsburgh, Cousins could join the Browns on a minimum contract if released by Atlanta, offering Cleveland a more affordable starting option.
Fowler also mentioned Vikings quarterback Sam Darnold as a potential target but thinks his price tag will be out of Cleveland’s range if he even becomes available. Ultimately, Fowler concludes that the Browns intend to “strengthen the quarterback room with the resources at the team’s disposal.” After a season of major setbacks, it appears Cleveland is moving away from Watson’s role as their guaranteed starter moving forward.
