Report: Brian Flores, Brian Daboll on Giants’ head coaching shortlist

Over the weekend, reports arose that suggested the New York Giants are “very interested” in Brian Daboll for their head coaching job, and that Brian Flores views Big Blue as a potential fit.

As we said at the time, where there’s smoke there’s usually fire.

Ralph Vacchiano of SNY has confirmed each of those reports and added his own spice, reporting that the Giants have both Flores and Daboll on their shortlist of potential head coaches.

The next general manager of the Giants might be the most important voice in the room when the team begins its search for a new head coach, especially if John Mara holds true to his promise that the next GM will have “the flexibility to bring in the head coach that he wants.”

But that doesn’t mean the Giants don’t already have a short list. And former Dolphins coach Brian Flores and Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll seem to be at the top.

Both of those coaches have been the subject of some discussion inside the Giants organization for quite some time, according to multiple sources familiar with their thinking, and they are both on the shortlists of several of the Giants’ nine GM candidates, according to various sources around the league. It’s possible that both coaches could get interviews with the Giants regardless of who is hired as the next GM.

Flores has already interviewed with the Chicago Bears and Houston Texans, while Daboll also recently met with Chicago.

Although Flores is free to pick and choose after being fired by the Miami Dolphins earlier this month, Daboll is still hard at work helping guide the Buffalo Bills through the AFC playoff field.

The Giants, of course, are still conducting general manager interviews and are determined to make that hire before committing to a new head coach. As a result, they could miss out on both Flores and Daboll if they continue to drag their feet.

A GM hire is expected by the end of the week, so they may get their shot at Daboll in the end. But Flores? The clock is very much ticking on him.
