Report: Brennan Scarlett has worked at a different position this offseason

The Miami Dolphins returned nearly all of their linebackers from last season, even though most were hitting free agency.

Miami re-signed Elandon Roberts, Sam Eguavoen, Duke Riley and Brennan Scarlett. They, once again, joined Jerome Baker, Andrew Van Ginkel and Jaelan Phillips in the linebacker room. Rookies Channing Tindall and Cameron Goode were drafted, and veteran Melvin Ingram signed late to round out the group.

Scarlett, who is set to enter his second season with the Dolphins, has apparently been working out a position other than linebacker. According to the Miami Herald’s Barry Jackson, Scarlett has been “working a lot at defensive end.”

During his career, Scarlett has played mostly outside linebacker. According to Pro Football Focus, Scarlett lined up outside on 114 of his 155 snaps in 2021. Before last season, the numbers were even higher, but he had also played more inside the box.

With all of the linebackers and defensive ends competing not only for snaps but also for jobs this season in South Florida, this type of versatility could make Scarlett more valuable to the coach and front office as they pare down the roster throughout the preseason.
