Report: Bengals Make Decision on Fifth-Year Contract Option for QB Joe Burrow

The Bengals picked up quarterback Joe Burrow’s fifth-year contract option, NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport reported on Tuesday.

The fifth-year option will guarantee Burrow $29.5 million in 2024, which is quite the jump from the $1.01 million he will earn in base salary this upcoming season, according to Spotrac.

This news didn’t come as much of a surprise since Cincinnati seems to be set on keeping Burrow in-house for the foreseeable future. The quarterback’s contract will now run through the 2024 season, making him an unrestricted free agent in ‘25 if a long-term deal isn’t figured out by then.

However, Rapoport reported back in January that the Bengals were considering giving Burrow a massive contract extension this offseason. Star quarterbacks such as Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen and Kyler Murray all received contract extensions ahead of their fourth seasons in the league.

The Bengals haven’t offered any update as to when they plan to sign Burrow to a contract extension, but it’s believed that the two sides will get a deal done.

Last season, Burrow earned his first Pro Bowl nod after finishing with 4,475 passing yards, 35 touchdowns, a 68.3 passing percentage and 12 interceptions. The Bengals made it to the AFC championship before losing to the eventual Super Bowl champions, the Chiefs.
