The Chicago Bears have requested to speak to New York Giants assistant head coach/offensive coordinator Mike Kafka in regards to filling their head coaching vacancy, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Kafka, 37, has been the Giants’ offensive coordinator since Brian Daboll took over as head coach in 2022. He previously worked as Patrick Mahomes’ quarterback coach in Kansas City under head coach Andy Reid.
Kafka would be a perfect fit for the Bears as he is both a Chicago native and a former star quarterback at Northwestern University.
This is the third offseason that he’s been riding the head coaching carousel. He went on several interviews over the past two years and was edged out of jobs for several teams, including the Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals.
As the Giants’ offensive coordinator this season, Kafka did not have play-calling responsibilities as they were taken over by Daboll.
As late as last week, Kakfa was asked about his future plans.
“Obviously, I love being here and I love working for Dabes and everybody,” Kafka said.
“Mike’s been a great teammate, good coach, good friend. Does a good job for us,” said Daboll.
Daboll is still waffling about his role as a play-caller going forward after co-owner John Mara spoke about it on Monday. If Kafka goes, Daboll will have to find another coach to call the plays for him.
