Report: Bears hiring Titans’ Luke Steckel to offensive staff

The Tennessee Titans’ tight ends coach role has led to some pretty significant promotions over the last few years.

Atlanta Falcons head coach, Arthur Smith, held that role with Tennessee from 2016-2018 before being promoted to offensive coordinator in 2019. Once Smith left for Atlanta, Todd Downing eventually got the promotion from tight ends coach to offensive coordinator in 2021.

This time around, the Titans’ former tight ends coach isn’t receiving the type of promotion as the previous two.

After initially accepting a role as the run-game analyst after the Titans named Tony Dews as the new tight ends coach, Luke Steckel has decided to join the Chicago Bears’ offensive line staff, according to Sam Phalen of AtoZ Sports Nashville.

Per Chris Emma of 670 The Score, Steckel is taking a position as an assistant offensive line coach.

Steckel had been with the Titans since the 2013 season, quietly working his way up the coaching ranks. He also received an interview for the Los Angeles Chargers’ offensive coordinator vacancy this offseason.

Last season, Steckel’s tight ends were responsible for about 30 percent of  the Titans’ receptions on the year, with 64 percent of those receptions (54-of-85) going for first downs. He also had a hand in developing promising young tight end, Chigoziem Okonkwo.

The run-game analyst role was a new position created this offseason, so it will be interesting to see how Mike Vrabel goes about replacing that job on his staff going forward.
