The Chicago Bears have a slew of needs heading into free agency, and offensive line is near the top of the list. There are questions at tackle and along the interior, which means we could see some big moves this offseason.
It’s clear that Sam Mustipher isn’t a starting center in the NFL, which is why center is among the top needs along the offensive line. While Ryan Jensen is off the market after signing a three-year extension with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, there are other options set to hit the open market.
One name that’s been linked to the Bears this offseason is Rams center Brian Allen. According to Brad Biggs of the Chicago Tribune, the Bears “could be in play” for Allen as free agency is about to kick off.
A strong group of veteran interior linemen is available. One source said the Bears could be in play for Los Angeles Rams center Brian Allen, a Hinsdale Central graduate who played at Michigan State.
Allen, who sat out 2020 due to a setback in his knee recovery, had an impressive season that earned him Pro Bowl alternate honors. Allen is the best center due to hit free agency, and he’s also from the Chicagoland area.
According to Spotrac, Allen is expected to cost $5.6 million per year, which is among the more affordable at his position. But the Bears will have to decide if their answer at center is currently on the roster — be it shifting Cody Whitehair to center — or if they’d rather target center in the offseason.
